The film is based on Sagarika Bhattacharya ’s autobiography, “The Journey of a Mother” published in 2022. the character of Mrs Chatterjee (Rani Mukerji) is a inspired by Sagarika in real life

Sagarika Bhattacharya moved to Norway in 2007 with her husband Anurup Bhattacharya. who become a geophysicist there Sagarika and Anurup Bhattacharya welcomed two children together - a son, Abhigyaan, and a daughter, Aishwarya. After the two kids were born, tragedy struck the Bhattacharya family.

According to Norwegian Child Welfare Services, the couple's children were taken from them in 2011 due to their 'incompetent parenting'.According to the organization, the couple committed child abuse.They also alleged that Sagarika was mentally ill, so she could not care for her children.

Why did they believe that? the couple just like any Indian parent slept in the same bed as their children, handfed them, and indulged in practices customary to Hindu traditions and rituals.this type of Practices as such were unknown to Norwegian culture that's why the Children Welfare Services took custody of the children.

when Norwegian authorities deemed Sagarika unsafe as a mother, the latter left no stone unturned to fight against the agency and state at large in order to reunite with her children.

The case became highly publicised soon and the Indian government had to step in.This news was welcomed but by the time these events become out, Sagarika and her husband separated. Thus Sagarika appealed to the authorities in India to be given sole custody of her children. This wasn’t easy but Sagarika persisted and was finally awarded her children’s custody in 2013.
